Nik. Afanassief addresses (in French) an important theological problem regarding the existence of a unified Eucharistic gathering in every city, and expresses the unity of the ancient Church. He analyses the concept of the “home church” –not in the sense of the “household church” but the local church congregating within a home. Later on presbyters come to solve the problem of the great numbers of Christians with the establishment of various liturgical centres, where Eucharist was celebrated in the name of the local Bishop.

W. Schneemelcher studies (in German) the “The era of Constantine”, an expression created in the 13^th century by protestant theology as an expression of a critical disposition against the modern Church. Research of the 4^th century reveals that the term contains an anachronistic critique of the modern Church by distorting the actual historical reality of the Church during Constantine’s century.

Ger. Zaphiris studies the knowledge of God according to the patristic thought of Saint Athanasius of Alexandria. The harmony of the world reveals the internal relationship of the creation with the Creator. This is why humans and the world are inconceivable without reference to God, because they constitute the “surface” of His philanthropic plan.

M. Aubineau studies (in French) various texts of Chrysostom in the manuscripts of Dochiarios 12 and of Koutloumousios 29, 30, 54, 55, according to the standard of the series “Codices Chrysostomici Graeci”.

Chr. Mavropoulou-Tsioumi also studies a manuscript from the Holy Monastery of Vatopedion, number 762, which refers to “heavenly Jerusalem”.

Professor A. Tachiaos studies (in French) the hesychastic movement in the last decade of the 14^th century, a difficult period because of an increasingly expansionist policy of the Turks against Byzantium and the southern Slavic states.

The Patriarch Filotheos Kokkinos plays a central role in the hesychastic movement, who in the name of his hesychastic beliefs followed a particular policy towards the autocephalous Slavic Churches.

David Balfour presents us with a complementary list of manuscripts that include known works of Symeon, Archbishop of Thessaloniki.

Kallistos Ware outlines the impressive course of Metropolitan Philaret of Moscow (1782-1876) and cites unpublished liturgical texts of his.

Finally, Metropolitan Stilianos Harkianakis studies (in German) the unity of the Church as a possibility for its mission in the world today, resulting from the essence of God Himself. The necessary precondition for its success is love, truth and freedom.

Then follow various book presentations and an analytical Chronicle of the second Theological Conference of the American Orthodox Theological Society, New York (25-29.9.1972) with the theme “Catholicity of the Church”.

This Issue contains 5 research papers, book presentations and an interesting Chronicle.

Pan. Christou studies texts regarding single-sexuality. These texts express the conviction that the separation of human species in two sexes is an unnatural and temporary condition, so it is necessary to transcend it and attain finally single-sexuality or non-sexuality. The influence on Gnosticism must be highlighted in particular. Gnostics view divinity and humanity as male and female at the same time, until fragmentation comes into it. Finally single-sexuality is considered to be an ideal to aspire to.

Constantine Tsirplanis makes an attempt (in English) to present the institution of the Parliamentary Assemblies and Parliaments in Byzantium (13-14^th century), underlining a) the way the senate functioned and b) the ecclesia of the state and local parliaments.

Gabriel Patacsi researches (in French) the period prior to the synod of Florence and highlights the figure of Joseph Vriennios, who played a leading role in Byzantium in his time, particularly as to the relations of Byzantium with the Latins.

Oscar Cullman, this great French theologian, studies the concept of salvation in the New Testament, meaning the relationship between God and humans, God and the world.

Markos Siotis responds to the above article of O. Cullman regarding the concept of salvation and  modern world.

Lastly, follows a book review as well as an important Chronicle on the Ukrainian ecclesiastical issue by Metropolitan Maximus of Sardeon.

This Issue contains 10 studies and important book presentations.

W. Schneemelcher in his text studies (in German) the history of divine economy in regards to Roman Empire, through the texts of Meliton of Sardica. According to Meliton, the common starting point of the Roman Empire (through August) and of the Church (through Jesus) is not a mere coincidence but reveals a substantial connection.

V. Pseutogas studies the Georgian speech “On the Cross”, which is found in the Georgian code A-144 in Tbilisi. The author translates the text into Greek from the Latin original and makes interesting observations about the whole speech.

W. Bienert describes (in German) code 236 of Vatopedion (monastery), mostly an anti-Origenic Anthology. This contains analyses of excerpts, from Dionysius and Peter of Alexandria, which were previously unknown.

A. de Santos Otero describes (in German) the contents of code 236 of the Holy Monastery of Vatopedion. This code is a valuable collection of patristic texts and the author analyzes the code’s palaeographic problems, which are supplemented in an Appendix by E. Lamberz (pages 327-329).

J. Coman studies the positions of Athanasius the Great regarding human salvation, in his well known work “De Incarnatione”. There is particular reference to redemption and its consequences to humans.

Pan. Christou researches the concept of salvation in Cappadocian Fathers. He explores the problem of sin and its consequences to humans in the patristic texts.

E. Lamberz studies (in German) an unknown manuscript, having the number 16 at the library of the Holy Monastery of Iviron. This research examines the place of the code in the manuscript tradition of the Ethics by Vasileios the Great and is estimated to be from the beginning of the 11^th century.

Archimandrite Nafkratios Tsoulkanakis examines, based on patristic texts, two basic charismata of the Holy Spirit, virginity and prophecy, coming to the conclusion that virginity in Christ is a kind of moral perfection, while the second is a charisma of diakonia, which also contributes to the salvation of the faithful, by revealing and interpreting the will of God.

Finally, Vas. Stogiannos continues the dialogue, initiated by M. Siotis and O. Cullman in Kleronomia issue 5 (1973) 97-144, about salvation in Christ and its adaptation to the modern world.

Kleronomia, Vol. 4, Issue B, July 1972, 466 pages.

This issue includes 8 research papers, book presentations and the Chronicle. It also includes a memorial feature on the late Patriarch Athenagoras A’.

Th. Zisis analyzes Plato’s views “on eschatology” in the work of the historian Eusebius of Caesarea. Through various approaches to the issue, the author reaches the conclusion that it is possible to distinguish a double eschatological perspective in Plato: a) eternity of hell and reward and b) periodical choice of new ways of life.

E. Chrysos studies (in German) the authenticity of epistle of Theodosius to Honorious. According to this research it is possible that Thessaloniki’s Collection (Syllogi Thessalonikis) was altered, so as to revoke the decree of 421 and justify Rome’s involvement in the Eastern Illyricum.

H. Petzold describes (in German) the stilite monks, an extreme form of ascesis introduced by Syrian monasticism during the fifth century. The Stilites vigorously tried to apply the principle of permanence of the place they lived in.

R. Schieffer completes (in German) one of his previous articles regarding the tradition of the “Confession of Sound Faith” by Justinian, which was published in the journal Klironomia 3 (1971) 285-302.

Vas. Fanourakis studies Saint Gregory Palamas’ To Akindinon speeches Antirritikon. He examines the Speech to the Synod, the Libel, regarding Grace, regarding energies. According to the author these writings can be included amongst other works of Akindinos, which are saved by the manuscript tradition.

K. Mitsakis researches a kind of para-hymnography which manifested itself mostly during Byzantium’s last few centuries. It is the appearance of parodies of liturgical poetry genres. The term “parody” does not denote only satire but also the employment of sacred forms for usages other than the liturgical act, as for example in the writing of various didactic poems.

G. Stathis studies (in Italian) alphabetic systems used in the writing of Byzantine Music in the period 1790-1850. This specialized article includes a relevant Appendix with many examples.

Finally, the Metropolitan of Militoupolis Stylianos examines the role of the Holy Spirit in the life of the Church. This text constituted the formal response of the Orthodox in the dialogue with the Anglicans on the same issue.

Then follows an extensive Book Review section as well as an important Chronicle by Vas. Stavridis regarding the personality of the Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras A’.
